Balham Blazers FC

It could be said that every frustration in football was replicated for this age group during the 2012/2013 season. Difficult decisions, conceding late goals, injuries, a long break on account of the weather but that is the same for every team and club in every season. Our Season is measured by our final league position.

We opened our campaign versus a well-drilled and efficient Rusthall. Conceding in the last minute we came away with a draw and a feeling that we should have won, a feeling that was replicated for the first five matches. We exited the League Cup in the first round losing to Rusthall, confidence was low and we decided to add to the coaching staff. Aaron Mitchell a scholar from QPR and Unai a disciple of the Spanish game organised, motivated and ultimately improved the team. We went on unbeaten run reaching the Semi final of the Shield and winning 4-0 against an unbeaten Oakwood in the league. This rhythm was halted by the poor weather and we returned in February unable to recapture the mid season form. We played fantastic football in the Semi final of the Shield but early errors cost us. A draw in the league versus eventual winners Junior Bromleians proved we were capable of so much more than our league position was suggesting.

We finished just out of the relegation zone a position that didn't reflect our ability or potential but one that says we must work harder in training and in matches. We must work as a team and act professionally at all times. We need to ensure we are available for matches and we continue to play our football in The Balham Blazers style.

If there were proof of how we can compete it was in the tournaments. At Claygate we didn't lose a match in open play nor concede a goal, only losing on penalties in the semi final. It is this determination, technique, fitness and team effort that will see us reach our goal of top two in the next season.

No doubt every frustration will be replicated in 2013/2014 but we have learnt, we have improved and when we measure our performance next May those frustrations will be forgotten.
