News SEASON 2012-13

BBFC Holiday Photo Competition
We are looking for the best, funniest, photos of the BBFC logo in holiday destinations. So, if you're going away this summer, be it to Torbay or Thailand, Dublin or Dubai, get snapping. We will publish the best ones on the website in September and award a prize for the winning photo. If you haven't got the logo with you then be creative and get Balham Blazers FC into a picture somehow.

Not a Bad Haul

At the end of his first season at BBFC, U12 Colts player, Rui Soares, has ended up with a glut of trophies and awards. As well as enjoying great success in tournaments, Rui won two individual club awards, including the prestigious cup for U12 Colts Players' Player of the Year. The only downside to bagging such a big haul of silverware is the amount of polishing that lies ahead. Hopefully he's as handy with a duster as he is with a football.

Shroot v Mitchell
Former BBFC Coach Robin Shroot (wearing orange in the photo) came up against former BBFC player and current U14 Coach, Aaron Mitchell (number 21 in the photo) when Stevenage played QPR in an U21 pre season game on Tuesday July 16th. Robin, who used to coach Aaron at BBFC, was one of a number of over age players on show.
Although QPR lost 2-0, Aaron, who is only 17, got to play alongside Anton Ferdinand, Luke Young and Jose Bosingwa.

2013 BBFC Presentation Evening
The weather was perfect on Friday July 5th for the annual BBFC Presentation Evening, at the end of our twelfth competitive season as a club and as last year, Trinity Fields, was heaving with BBFC players, family and friends. Even an Andy Murray Wimbledon semi final didn't get in the way. The very popular bungee run and speed cage returned again and this time no extra burger and beer run was needed as there was enough on site to feed and water an army. It all got eaten and drunk however. Many thanks go to Sullivan Thomas, who sponsored the event once again and to Chadwick's who provided the sizzling sausages. Thanks also to those who helped organise another glorious occasion and to all those who helped on the night. It's been another incredibly successful season for BBFC, with the club having won or been runners up in a record breaking 28 league and cup competitions, so there was much to celebrate.

Special congratulations go, as ever, to all those who won prestigious individual club awards:
Sullivan Thomas Training Trophy Winners:
U9 Colts - Abu Diabate • U9 Eagles - Jack Appleton • U10 Colts - Kian Hill • U10 Eagles - Ryan Pickles • U10 Youth - Francis Tulley • U11 Colts - Tom Appleton • U11 Eagles - Sirak Negassi • U11 Youth - Nathan Daniels • U12 Colts - Arya Dashtabady, Bardya Dashtabady • U12 Eagles - Marshall Travers-Elwin • U14s - Toby Ward-Smith • U15s - Tom McDonald, Joe Ostrowski • U18s - Eddie Luchford • First Team - Zak Elbekri

Sullivan Thomas Players Player Of The Year Winners:
U9 Colts - Eddie Miller, Joe Taylor • U9 Eagles - Jonah Cahusac • U10 Colts - Archie Gordon-Smith, Kian Hill • U10 Eagles - Clay Chapman • U10 Youth - Marco Gagnier, Nathaniel Pearce • U11 Colts - Cheick Diabate, Ruben Rea • U11 Eagles - Ryan Jones • U11 Youth - Taryn Vancooten • U12 Colts - Rui Soares • U12 Eagles - Gus Colfer, Ellis Griffiths-Phipps • U14s - Charlie Appleton • U15s - Akbar Bashir • U18s - Eddie Luchford • First Team - Zak Elbekri

JC National Winner
Congratulations to BBFC U10 Youth Coach, Jaden Cameron, who was presented with the TPAS - Young Tenant Of The Year National Award, in Manchester on Thursday July 11th. Jaden had previously won the Southern Regional Award, which put him through to the National finals. Jaden won the award for his outstanding achievements and the inspiration he brings to his local community and the younger generation.

Kidspace Outing
At the end of a very successful season, the BBFC U10 Youth team enjoyed an end of season outing to Kidspace in Croydon on Sunday July 14th. The squad from this season were joined by new additions for the next one - Joseph Armitage, Silas Harris, Anna Prawer and Jamie Weston, as well as Kyren Simpson-Cameron, who is moving onto the Youth team from the Colts.

Cheicking Out Murray
The day after his historic victory at Wimbledon, Andy Murray, met with some fans in Kennington. U11 Colts skipper, Cheick Diabate, (top left corner) was lucky enough, along with his class mates, to be one of them. A great opportunity for a hard working, extremely talented, young footballer to meet an extremely talented man who is living proof that hard work does pay.

Exhilarating End
The BBFC tournament season came to an exhilarating end at Furngate and Abbey Rangers on the weekend of July 6th/7th. On Saturday 6th, both our U9 Colts and U11 Eagles, with outstanding performances, won the Furngate Tournament, whilst our U15s finished as Runners Up. On Sunday 7th, our one team at the Abbey Rangers Tournament, U10 Colts, won the Plate Competition, whilst back at Furngate, as Andy Murray produced the goods at Wimbledon, our U12 Colts and U12 Eagles, blitzed the group stage and knockouts to make it an all BBFC final, as it was last year. The U12 Colts won the final, with clinical efficiency, to lift the tournament trophy. Our U10 Eagles also made the final, which went to extra time but, having won three tournaments in a row, this time they had to settle for Runners Up.
Look at the following link for Furngate Tournament article written in Crawley Observer.

Good Weather Good Burgers Good Football
It was another excellent weekend for BBFC at the Petts Wood tournament on June 29th/30th. Not only was the weather sublime, the burgers were scrumptious - as they always are at PWFC - and most importantly of all the football was superb in the main. Congratulations to both the U18s and U10 Eagles who won the tournament, courtesy of golden goal winners from Reynell Ashie and Luke Cahusac. Our U12 Colts, unbeaten in eight games on their journey to the final, finished as runners up, losing another very tight game to a golden goal in the last minute of extra time. Our U17s reached the semi finals and the U11 Colts and U9 Colts reached the quarter finals. Our U8s, in a non competitive event, also performed magnificently.

Balham FC Promoted
It's official - Balham FC have been promoted. Two seasons, two promotions and another step nearer to The Champions League. Many congratulations to all involved with the First Team, who having lost their first three games of the season, lost only one of the remaining seventeen, to finish third in the SSEC Intermediate Division 2. They scored seventy goals in twenty league games and had the best goal difference in the league. They also played some fantastic football. Next season Balham will be in Intermediate Division 1, which is two steps below the Combined Counties League, which the club is aiming to get to.

Guildford Glory
There was glory at Guildford on the weekend of June 22nd/23rd, along with some unexpected wind burns for those who were there for the duration. Special congratulations go to the U11 Colts, who were unbeaten and played fantastically to win the tournament. Congratulations also to our U10 Eagles who won the plate competition and to our U12 Colts, who defeated our U12 Eagles, in the final, on penalties, to also win the plate. Our U18s were tournament runners up, scoring 14 and conceding 0 en route to the final, where, having looked unstoppable, they lost very unluckily to a miscued shot in the last minute. All in all, it was another very successful tournament for BBFC.

Balham Blazers Bursary Fund Grows
Our Bursary Fund offers full or part bursaries to players selected to play for the club who can't afford all or part of the fees. To keep funding this scheme as the club grows we invite parents and friends of the club, in a position to do so, to support us by contributing donations to the Bursary Fund.

Please give if you can - this is an amazing way to give a child the joy of developing their football skills and being part of a team within a thriving club. Any donations are extremely generous and very much welcomed by the club and our Bursary recipients.

The ideal time to contribute is at our annual registration days on Wednesday 26th June, 6pm-8pm and Saturday 6th July, 10am-12pm at Chestnut Grove School.

If you have been selected to play for the club and would like to apply for Bursary funding please contact the club: info@balhamblazers.org.uk.

Under 10s

It's Not Where You Start
Both our U10 Eagles and U12s lost their first group matches at the Elm Grove tournament on the weekend of June 15th/16th however both ended up qualifying from their groups for the quarter finals and then going all the way to the final itself. Our U10 Eagles won their final 1-0 to win the tournament. Our U12s were extremely unlucky though to lose their final by the same score to a somewhat dubious penalty, three minutes from the end of normal time. Overall it was another extremely successful tournament for BBFC. In addition to winning the U10 tournament, where there was an all BBFC semi final – Eagles v Youth - and finishing as runners up in the U12s, where scalps taken included the Surrey Cup winners 5-0 in the group stage, in the other two age groups where we had teams entered, U11s and U14s, we got to the semi finals.

Under 12

Sportsmanship Award
Many congratulations to our U12 Eagles, manager Mark Matheson and all associated with the squad, sponsored by Samuel Estates. Not only did they win their league but they have won the Sportsmanship Award too. A fantastic double!

Under 10 Eagles

Pens Rob Eagles Again
Unbeaten in games both at Claygate and at Worcester Park, it's penalties that have cost the Eagles dearly at both tournaments. Having won four and drawn one of their group games and won their semi final, without conceding a goal, they drew in the final at Worcester Park on Saturday June 1st, 1-1, before losing 3-2 from the penalty spot. Clay Chapman finished top goal scorer at the tournament at which once again the Eagles played superbly. They have played ten games in all at the two tournaments so far, not lost any and only conceded one goal. Let's hope come the next tournament they can all turn German if there's another PK shoot out.

Eagles Epic Effort
Many congratulations to our U11 Eagles who represented BBFC at the Rusthall Tournament on Saturday May 26th and put in an epic effort to finish as tournament runners up. With a depleted squad of only six, due to late illness withdrawals, which meant they had no subs to use throughout, the stupendous six on show put in a stunning performance, playing no less than nine games, to get all the way to the final, which they lost narrowly 1-0 - not surprising considering they'd all played every minute of every game. They conceded only two goals in the competition, which was of a very high standard. Our U15s also represented BBFC, on the same day, at the Manorcroft Utd tournament in Surrey, where they won all of their group games, without conceding a goal, playing great football but, unfortunately then bit the dust, losing 2-1 in a very close semi final.

Second Round Trials Update
Results for all School Y2-Y7 Second Round Trials, will be published on this website on Tuesday May 21st. Click here to see the results page.

Two Cups At Claygate
Many congratulations to both the U12 Colts and U11 Colts who won the prestigious Claygate Royals Tournament on the weekend of May 18th and 19th. Both teams were unbeaten throughout the event. Our U14s were also unbeaten and didn’t concede a goal however they went out on penalties at the semi final stage. Our U12 Eagles also reached the semi finals, where they regrettably had to play our U12 Colts, thus robbing the club of a possible all BBFC final. Our U9 Colts reached the semi final stage too. Our U10 Eagles, also unbeaten in the group stage, without conceding a goal, lost on penalties in the quarter finals. Last, but certainly not least, our U8s playing in a non competitive event, won four and drew one of their five games, scoring nine times and conceding only once. Most importantly of all, over what was a very successful weekend for the club, the style and quality of play from all BBFC teams entered into this excellently run tournament, was complimented by many.

Golden League Winners
Congratulations to Penwortham School who, with victory against Hillbrook on Thursday May 16th, won the Wandsworth Primary Schools Golden League. The title winning Penwortham squad features no less than five BBFC players: Tom Appleton (U11 Colts), Louie Barnett (U11 Youth), Nathan Daniels (U11 Youth), Archie Gordon-Smith (U10 Colts) and Luca Maraviglia (U11 Colts).

Unbeaten Eagles
Many congratulations to the BBFC U12 Eagles who have not only won the Tandridge League B Division but are unbeaten in doing so. For those like to visit stato corner, they conceded only sixteen goals in eighteen games, which is phenomenal especially when you consider that half of their matches were played on pitches with full-sized goals. They also scored seventy-three goals, more than four per match. Credit goes to all sixteen players in the squad, who have worked incredibly hard over the season and also to manager, Mark Matheson, who has done an exceptional job in his first season in charge. This exceptionally talented group have previously won the London Saturday Youth Football League at Under 9, Under 10 and Under 11.

15s Runners Up
Many congratulations to all the players in the BBFC Under 15 squad, to their manager, Jim McDonald and to their coach, Iain McKay. Not only has this age group, in their second season together at Balham Blazers FC, finished as runners up in the Tandridge League B Division, one point behind the winners, Oakwood FC, but they done have so staying true to the principals of the club, playing exceptionally good, eye catching football, which has drawn many admirers along the way.

Medals And 99s At Sandhurst
Three BBFC age group teams entered the Sandhurst Town Tournament over the weekend of May 11th and 12th. They endured mixed fortunes both on the pitch and with the weather. Our Under 8s did the best of the three teams in terms of results, finishing as Runners Up in a high standard tournament. After eight games on a busy afternoon most left carrying medals in one hand and 99 cornets with flakes in the other. Our U9 Colts also did extremely well to qualify from their group and reach the semi finals where they lost very narrowly 1-0. Our U11 Eagles played some excellent football but, on this occasion, just missed qualifying for the knockout stages. The tournament itself was very well run and is definitely one we will look to enter more BBFC teams into next year.

Aaron And QPR Win The League
Many congratulations to former BBFC player and current U14s coach, Aaron Mitchell, who played for QPR U18s in the Professional Development League Play-Off Final at Loftus Road on Wednesday May 15th. Not only did Aaron, a first year scholar at the club, have a cracking game himself but his QPR team won the final v Huddersfield Town FC 1-0. Nice one Aaron!

The Chelsea Story Continues
Former BBFC player, Will Donkin, continues to do exceptionally well in the Chelsea FC Academy, as a result of which he has just signed a new schoolboy contract for a further two years. Will has just returned from a European Academy tournament in Italy where his U12 team competed against teams from Inter Milan, Ajax, Benfica and Juventus.

Don’t Forget The Tupperware
QUESTION: Is it more important when going to a Youth Team game, to win the match that you are playing or to make sure the Tupperware is returned to the households that filled it with half time snacks, pre and post match food? ANSWER: Failure to win the match costs points but failure to return the Tupperware is a fate worse than death.

Kit Washers
Many thanks to all those who wash kits for the club. If you're happy to fly the club colours on your washing line please let us know as we could do with more volunteers, especially for the BBFC Youth Team and the Balham FC First Team.

BBFC Trials
Well done to all those who attended the BBFC Y2-Y7 trials at Trinity Fields on Sunday April 28th. It was another excellent turnout and the standard was very high. Every player present did themselves proud, as did their parents and friends too. Many thanks to Jennie, Kate, Sue and Zoe for doing all the admin and refreshments and thanks to the many BBFC Coaches who took sessions on the day. Results have been posted on the Trials page. You can view them by clicking this link.

Sky Diving Keeper
We all knew that Balham First Team keeper, Tom Jelliffe, can dive all over the place, like all good keepers do but, not then he can sky dive too, which he did recently on a two month gap year trip to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and California - all countries, as he commented, that prefer the wrong shaped ball. Along with the sky diving Tom and his two travelling companions also did some bungee jumping, white water rafting and bull shark scuba diving - with no cage! As instructed, Tom managed to get photos in most places wearing the Balham Blazers badge. He says the only thing that he missed was playing for Balham FC, although I'm sure he must have missed his family a little bit too. Hope so, as they are very nice people.

2013 BBFC Sponsored Marathon
For once this season the weather was ideal as our younger age groups gathered on Sunday April 21st at Trinity Fields for the annual fundraising Sponsored Marathon. The weather was very good but the running from all those who participated was even better. Each runner carried the baton for 1km as part of a relay which covered the full marathon distance of 42km. The record time of 2 hours 47 minutes was set back in 2008 but this year it was equalled. This is particularly remarkable and shows the high standard of running on the day as all runners who took part were Under 8s to Under 12s.

The fastest individual times in each age group were:
Under 9s: Jonah Cahusac U9E - 3.46.06 • Jack Hedges U9E - 3.48.62 • Joe Taylor U9C - 3.55.25
Under 10s: Clay Chapman U10E - 3.29.00 • Thomas Fallowfield U10C - 3.34.47 • Luke Cahusac U10E - 3.35.10
Under 11s: Nathan Daniels U11Y - 3.22.50 • Aaron Bafi U11E - 3.22.63 • Taryn Vancooten U11Y - 3.32.85
Under 12s: Sebastian Fallowfield U12E - 3.12.38 • Danny Given U12E - 3.13.84 • Ellis Griffiths-Phipps U12E - 3.25.56

A full list of times are available to view on the Sponsored Marathon page. Many thanks to everyone who took part and made this another memorable day in the Balham Blazers FC calendar. It's not just about the running and running fast, it's more importantly about taking part and helping out the club.

Many thanks also to all those on the BBFC Committee who helped with event organisation both prior to the event and on the day. Let's hope that we can raise a lot of money to buy the new goals and equipment we need for next season.
See the page of photos.

BBFC

Roger At Luton
BBFC U16 player last season, Roger Peron Conceicao, is living in digs during the week in Luton in his first year as a scholar at the club. We are delighted that when he comes home for the weekend he often comes and visits us at BBFC and joins in our Friday training sessions. All is going well for Roger so far, as it is for Aaron Mitchell at QPR, Alec Fiddes at Lleida Esportiu in Spain and Shawn Lyle, who has been on a three month camp with the Jamaican U20 National squad. Former Youth team captain, Joe Holland, is also currently doing very well in the First Team at Ryman League club, Merstham and a number of other BBFC players are playing at a similar level, looking to push on higher as and when an opportunity arises. We also have a number of players doing very well at University including, Daniel Forde, who will be playing for Cambridge in the Varsity Match this coming Saturday March 30th at Selhurst Park.

jefferys

Hat Trick Debut
Striker Louis Jeffery made a record breaking full debut for the Youth team on Thursday March 14th at home to Hanworth Villa FC. Having come on as a sub in the previous game against St Andrews, he started for the first time against Villa and marked the occasion by bagging a first half hat trick, which contributed greatly to Balham's 4-3 win on the night. It's great to see Louis, who is a very talented player, back playing for the club after he stepped away from playing football altogether for a season.

BBFC

BBFC v BBFC v BBFC
There will be no Balham Blazers v Balham Blazers League Cup Final in the U11s this season as all three Blazers teams, Colts, Eagles and Athletic, were on the same side of the draw. This did mean however that there was an all BBFC Quarter Final with BBFC Athletic knocking out BBFC Eagles and then an all BBFC Semi Final where BBFC Colts defeated BBFC Athletic on Saturday March 2nd to reach the LCSYFL Cup Final in May.

Darren Departs
Many thanks on behalf of all at BBFC to Darren Gregoire who has finished his time as Club Physio. Darren started the department, holding clinics at Chestnut Grove School and then at Ernest Bevin College. We are very grateful for all that he has done and his work has paved the way for others to follow. Darren is leaving to pursue medical studies abroad and we all wish him great success. We hope to have a new Club Physio in place asap.

quiz night

Saturday Night Fever
Seven of the fourteen teams competing went into the final nail biting, all to play for and all to lose "Scandals" round at the annual 2013 BBFC Quiz Night on March 10th within four points of each other. The eventual winners, Saturday Night Fever, emerged victorious, beating the joint runners up by a single point at the end of nine bruising rounds of questions. It was the most keenly fought contest we’ve had. Under 15 parent, Dennis Church, collected the trophy and medals for his team, serenaded by a blaring "We Are The Champions." The evening itself, sold out in advance once again, was a great success, raising £3,900 for the club - a record total. Many thanks go to many people who helped both before and on the night itself. Special thanks go to Matthew Taylor who put together the quiz and to Diana Luchford who once again organised the whole event supremely. She announced that this was to be her last Quiz Night in charge and if that's to be the case – which we all hope it isn’t - then she certainly went out on a belter.

Jaden Wins Award
Many congratulations to BBFC U10 Youth Team Coach/Manager, Jaden Cameron, who has won the 2013 TPAS Young Tenant Of The Year Award. TPAS stands for Tenant Participation Advisory Service. Jaden won this award for outstanding work in improving his community and helping to make a difference to the lives of the younger generation. BBFC is delighted for him and proud to have him as a coach in the club.

cry logo

Cardiac Risk In The Young
We as a club urge any BBFC player aged 14-35 to attend a cardiac screening at St George’s Hospital Tooting. Everyone will no doubt have read of high profile cases in the media where extremely fit young athletes who push themselves doing sport but who have undetected heart conditions, have in some cases tragically lost their lives. CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young – is the charity that is raising awareness about this issue which affects approximately 1 in 500 people. Every athlete owes it to themselves and their families to make sure that they do not have a condition which could, if undetected, have serious consequences. There are free screenings on offer at St George’s on May 11th and BBFC urges you all to book in for one either then or at the next available opportunity.

winter camp

Cold Camp
It was Siberian weather conditions on Doctor Johnson Avenue at the BBFC Half Term Camp from February 20th-22nd. Despite the biting wind and occasional snow flurry however the standard of the football was excellent throughout. On the final day Holland won the World Cup and Tom Appleton and Jack Redmond were age group winners of the legendary BBFC game - The Log. If you haven’t played The Log, you haven’t lived.

Sprint Coaching
We were delighted to welcome coaches from local athletics club, Herne Hill Harriers, to U12 training on Friday February 8th. The coaches came down to do a sprint session for both our U12 Colts and Eagles. The session was a great success and the coaches will be returning. We also hope that an established link with HHH will result in sprint coaching sessions being put on for other BBFC age group teams.

Physio Clinic Suspended
We are suspending the Wednesday Physio Clinic until further notice as the sports club partner we had in what was a joint venture hiring the gym at Ernest Bevin College, has regrettably had to pull out, leaving us to fully fund the clinic, which we can’t, at present, afford to do. We are currently renegotiating our booking and will keep you posted with developments. Rest assured however the Physio Clinic, which has become an integral part of BBFC, will be up and running again, either at Ernest Bevin College or elsewhere.

Dead Eye Joe
Every team could do with a twenty goal a season goal scorer and Joe Taylor from the U9 Colts would seem to fit the bill. With many games still to be played, thanks to the inclement weather, dead eye Joe has already netted 15 goals in total in his first season at the club, 12 of which have come in his last 4 games. What makes Joe’s impressive tally even more impressive is that he's only actually played up front twice.

Uni Boys
A number of former BBFC Youth team players are currently at University. They include: Junior Appiah at Brunel, Alfie Cruttwell at Birmingham, Dan Forde at Cambridge, Julian Fuller at Aston, Michael McConnell at Southampton, Tom Read at Loughborough and Guy Farquharson at Leeds Met. As well as being a fine footballer, Guy, number 3 in the picture above, is also a very talented volleyball player and as such recently won his first international cap after being selected to play for England in the Novetal Cup in Luxembourg. The young inexperienced England team, average age of twenty, beat the Czech Republic and competed well against very strong sides from Norway and Luxembourg.

training session

The Very Last Session
The First Team/Youth Team session on December 30th was thought to be the last session of 2012 however ten of the ever eager U12 Eagles squad gathered together on New Years Eve morning to beat them to it. Despite it being incredibly gloomy and nearly dark at 10am there was a glut of goals in the mud on Tooting Common and the very last training match of 2012 finished in a 10-10 draw.

training

The Last Session
The last training session of 2012 was held on Clapham Common on Sunday December 30th. With a mix of current First Team and Youth Team players along with players back from university on show, the 9 a side training match, despite a bog of a pitch to play on, provided a good post turkey and trimmings work out and was, as ever, an excellent advert for Balham FC and Balham Blazers FC football.

club dads

Christmas Crackers
With the curtains drawn on first part of the season for the age group teams, a group of willing dads and age group managers, brought together by Mark Matheson, thought they would display their Messi-like skills in a game of their own on Sunday December 22nd. The intended 11 v 11 soon got whittled down to 5 v 5 thanks to the festive season and the more pressing priorities of parties and kids and present buying and picking up meat from the butchers etc.

The game kicked-off at 10.30am on the 3g at Chestnut Grove with a packed crowd of two wives and two sons in attendance. They were guaranteed a spectacle and with talent such as Paul “Shay” Given, “Artful” Andreas Harrison, “Dynamite” Darren O’Grady, “The Immense” Ian McDowell, “Marvellous” Mark Matheson on the Yellow team and “Baby Faced” Jaden Cameron, “Glorious” Grenville Fox, “Emperor” Edwin Daep, Vid “Vicious” and Ex Porto Academy Keeper Pedro “soars through the air” Soares on the Shirts team a spectacle is what they got. 2-2 at half time, an enthralling contest in which everyone played their part eventually finished 5-3 to the Shirts.

Thankfully at the end of the seventy-five minutes played the many aging limbs on show managed to walk off the pitch without the aid of St Johns ambulance. The spirit was friendly and competitive throughout. Everyone congratulated good play when it was seen and above all it was a good excuse to pack away more turkey and other delights over the coming days without an ounce of guilt.

Help the heroes

Help For Heroes
For the last eighteen months Balham FC First Team player, Andy Neill and a work colleague of his from HMP Wandsworth have been fundraising in order to raise money for Help For Heroes. Rather than just raising money, they decided to try some sort of challenge in order to replicate some of the challenges our soldiers take on every single day.

They chose to tackle Mount Everest and set off for Nepal on Wednesday November 14th. They will arrive back on December 2nd. The trek itself will take roughly sixteen days -eleven to ascend and five to descend.

To date they have raised in excess of £12,500 and are hoping that this figure will continue to rise. The money goes directly to Help For Heroes with no tax or administrative deductions. It is used to help injured servicemen and women. The donations help to create Rehabilitation Centres, such as Tedworth House and Headley Court, which offer full medical rehabilitation to the injured personnel returning from Tours of Duty. Not only is medical rehabilitation offered but the injured personnel are also offered opportunities to reintegrate back into the community.

Andy and his colleague would be very grateful for any support and donations towards this worthy cause. You can contact him at andrewrneill@aol.com
The donation page is www.bmycharity.com/everestchallenge2012

Under 12

Remembrance Sunday
Balham Blazers U12 Colts were amongst many teams who observed a minutes silence before matches on Sunday November 11th, in memory all those who lost their lives in the two world wars and other conflicts.

FA training session

LFA In Service Training
Balham Blazers were delighted to host a second London FA In Service training session at Chestnut Grove School on Friday November 9th. The session, taken by FA Regional Coach Development Manager, Matthew Joseph and using the BBFC Under 17 squad was put on for coaches from Charter Standard clubs across London. It was very well attended and we look forward to hosting another one in the future. Click this link to see what the FA have written about the evening on their website.

greg cruttwell

Crutts Awarded
BBFC General Manager, Greg Cruttwell, was the proud recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Community Football Award at the 2012 London FA Awards Ceremony held at Upton Park on Thursday November 1st. In his acceptance speech Greg thanked and paid tribute to the fantastic Committee and Coaches at Balham Blazers and of course the hundreds of players that he’s worked with over the years since starting the club with one Under 10 team back in 2001. Everything, according to Greg, is about the team you get around you both on and off the pitch. “If you work in tandem with good people then you tend to get good results.”

camp

Half Term Camp
There was another excellent turnout for the Half Term BBFC Soccer camp in the last week of October. Along with drills and skills work many of the classic BBFC games were played including, On The Line and The Log. There was also the daily football quiz at which Rui Soares, from the U12 Colts, shone almost as brightly as U11 Colts player, Luca Maraviglia, has shone in the past.

Mitchell For U14s
Fantastic footballer and Balham Blazers stalwart Aaron Mitchell, currently a scholar at QPR, where he is doing exceptionally well, has joined the BBFC coaching roster and will be coaching the U14s in the Tandridge League. We are delighted that Aaron, who regularly attends First team and Youth team games is back at BBFC as a member of staff.

Young Leader
Congratulations to First Team player, Dan David, who applied for and has been selected to be on the newly set up London FA Young Leaders Council. Dan has been a top player for BBFC for many years and is currently on a gap year. He has also just completed his FA level 1 coaching badge.

appletons

Appletons Aplenty
There are currently three Appletons – all extremely talented - playing at BBFC: Charlie in the U14s, Tom in the U11 Colts and Jack in the U9 Eagles. A fourth Appleton, Ben, although currently too young, is nonetheless kitted up and ready to answer the call when his time comes.

under 12s

Balham Affair
It was an all Balham affair for our U12s at the Richardson Evans Memorial Ground on Sunday October 21st as Balham Blazers Colts met Balham Blazers Eagles in the Tandridge League. This eagerly awaited encounter between two talented squads lived up to expectations and the match was a great advert for BBFC football. It was tense, exciting and closely contested from beginning to end with the Eagles coming back from 1-0 down at half time to win 2-1. Fittingly all three officials on the day were BBFC stalwarts, Daniel Doorgakant Tomasz Wocial and Aaron Mitchell. It was also very good to see Mark Bainbridge, from club sponsors, Samuel Estates at the game. Their continued support is much appreciated.

dorkins

Sign Here Mr Donkin
We are delighted to announce that former BBFC player, William Donkin, who was signed by Barnet FC from Balham Blazers FC, has signed schoolboy terms with Chelsea FC. We all wish Will well with Chelsea U12s.

Perfect hat-Trick
Well done to Jacob Veerapen, U15's striker, for bagging a "perfect" hat-trick on Sunday October 14th. His combination of left foot, right foot and headed goals helped the U15's to a 7-2 victory over local rivals Tooting & Mitcham Utd. The team currently sit top of the League with a 100% start to the season, with all four new signings, David Kemp, Akbar Bashir, Nikolas Patsalos and Luke Henderson settling in well and strengthening the squad.

marines

Balham Meets The Marines
The Royal Marines came to First Team/Youth Team training on Tuesday October 9th, as part of their Meet The Marines programme and took a fitness session for our squads, none of whom knew they were coming. The PT Instructors were seemingly very impressed with our players levels of fitness and attitude to being put through the wringer. Needless to say a lot of fatigued, sore bodies left the 3g at 8pm. One squad member remarked the morning after, "Walking to work today, looking like I was trying to lay an egg!! Cannot move at all." Another remarked, “I got up this morning and realised I’d left my quads at Chestnut Grove.”

Balham Blazers youngest supporter, Chloe Quintos, sister of U11 Colts player, Khairen Quintos, can be seen above sporting her first Balham Blazers outfit at three weeks of age.

FA Charter Standard In-Service
Balham Blazers FC have been invited by the London FA to host a second prestigious Charter Standard In-Service training session at Chestnut Grove, having hosted one successfully last year. The session will take place on Friday November 9th from 7pm to 9pm and all coaches from Charter Standard clubs are invited to attend this event for CPD and further learning. The BBFC Under 17 squad will be put through a themed practice with opportunities for further questions at the end of the session. The session, which is part classroom and part practical, will be led by FA regional coach development manager, Matthew Joseph, following on from Fulham’s Derek Bradley in 2011. It is a chance for any coaches to complete this item on the Charter Standard health check form.

London FA Development
We are delighted to announce that, after a successful application, BBFC has been awarded a £500 London FA Development grant. Many thanks to the LFA and to our sponsorship secretary, Louise Eyeington, who made the application on behalf of the club.

The Old And The New
It's great to see BBFC Coach and former U18 Manager, Pat Walker, back working at the club this season, now that his medical studies have eased up a bit. We also have a number of new team managers, coaches and helpers this season. Wandsworth Young Volunteer Of The Year for 2011, Jaden Cameron, has joined us and is managing the U10 Youth team. Mike Hughes, who brings a wealth of experience and football knowledge, is managing our U10 Colts. Dynamic duo, JR Burgess and Lee Cooper, have taken up the reins with the U11 Youth team and former Surrey U16 Coach, Mark Matheson, is managing the U12 Eagles. BBFC Medical Director, Darren Gregoire, who helped take pre season training, is managing the U17s. Euan Gardner and Marco Boulton, who have recently done their FA Level 1 badges, have also joined us and are helping out at sessions for the younger age groups. We are also delighted to have two new specialist goalkeeper coaches. The vastly experienced, Dominicio Iuliano, who is currently working with our U14 and U15 keepers and former FC Porto Academy keeper, Pedro Soares, who is working with our U12s.

Treasurer
Many thanks to Del Fordham who has agreed to take over as BBFC Treasurer from the long serving Sue Lamont. Sue has given brilliant service to the club handling the purse strings but is now stepping down from that position to concentrate on her role as BBFC LCSYFL Secretary, which is a big job in itself. We are also delighted to welcome Morag Rea onto the BBFC committee. Amongst other things, Morag will be our Fines Secretary, aiming to ensure that we don’t get any needless off the field admin fines from leagues that our teams are playing in. Beware Managers: Morag will be on your case, if you slip up!

shrooty

Shrooty Grabs The Winner
Former BBFC Coach, Robin Shroot, who hopes to return to coaching with the club this season, continued his fine form for Stevenage Borough by grabbing the 90th minute winner away to Notts County on Tuesday October 2nd. Robin's goal means that Stevenage currently sit in second place in League One. It was a smart finish from Shrooty and a smart shirt removal afterwards, as part of his zestful goal celebration.

jame and joe

Blazers In The USA
Former First team and Youth team captain, Joe Holland and centre back, Jamie Brason, known as St Jamie, both of whom have been with BBFC since they were ten, have won four year football scholarships to universities across the pond. Joe is in Long Island and Jamie is jetting out to St Louis. College “soccer” in the USA is highly prestigious and very well supported. Needless to say we wish them both great success.

race night

Race Night
There was an electric atmosphere in Wandsworth on Friday September 28th as players from Balham’s younger teams, along with parents and friends, went to the races in a church hall opposite our home ground at Trinity Fields. The heavily backed Jungle George delivered, as did Charlton Athletic, in the football club race, the last of the nine on the card. Every horse backed by U10 Youth team player, Ollie Bowen, seemed to cross the line in front. He is clearly a natural tipster. The evening, a fundraiser for BBFC and a chance for younger players to get together, have fun and cheer on the nags of their choice, was a great success and has raised £566 for the club. Along with the races, a delicious Chilli Con Carne dinner was served, which spiced up and an already hot atmosphere, even further. Many thanks to Rachel Arbuckle for organising the event, to M&M – Mark Chaudoir and Mary Kleczkowski – for cooking the Chilli Con Carne and to all those who helped on the night, serving food, behind the bar and running the tote.

Lyle In Jamaica
Shawn Lyle, BBFC Youth Team centre forward last season, is currently in Jamaica having been called up to the Jamaican U20 National Squad for a three month training camp.

Thanks To Darren
Congratulations to Chris Dewey of the U11 Youth team who scored 8 goals on Saturday September 22nd. Trey Monlial was also in the goals with 5 in the same game. Fred Fordham's 3 goals in the U12 Eagles' 6-1 win on Sunday was, on paper, a slightly less spectacular feat, however, since these goals came in his first game back after a torn thigh muscle, Fred was keen to dedicate them to the healing hands of the Balham Blazers Physio, Darren Gregoire.

Alex Fiddles

The Extremo
It is with great pride that we at Balham Blazers FC can announce that in August, long serving Balham Youth team and First team player, Alec “Messi” Fiddes, signed a professional contract with the Spanish Football Federation to play for Club Lleida Esportiu in the 2nd B Division, which is the equivalent of League One in the UK. Alec is registered as a juvenil (Under 19) but Lleida also have him lined up to play first team matches as an "Extremo" (winger). Alec is currently training five hours a day from Tuesday to Friday and playing matches on Saturdays. Lleida are currently second in the League. Alec, along with a Malian and Ghanaian, is one of three foreign players at the club. He is loving every minute of his time at present – who wouldn’t?! - and is especially looking forward to lining up against Barcelona B on November 18th.

Crossbar Challenge
Check out the Balham Blazers U17 team in action doing a Crossbar Challenge after the 5-0 home win on Sunday September 16th. This was filmed using an iPhone 4, in one take, with no changes to the sequence of events and of course a sprinkle of the Balham Blazers magic dust! Enjoy!

St Mary’s Sports Day Bursary awarded to BBFC
Balham Blazers attended the St Mary's Sports Day on the first day of the Olympics. It was a community event and a real celebration – recognising and embracing the values of the Olympic motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius - faster, higher, stronger’ and welcoming the community to a fun filled day of sports related activities. Balham Blazers presence at the event helped raise money to support youngsters who require assistance with funding to do sport.

BBFC would like to thank Debbie Apostolides who organised the event and The St Mary’s committee have kindly donated £800 to our ever growing bursary fund, which offers full or part bursaries to players selected to play for the club who can't afford all or part of the fees. Any donations are extremely generous and very much welcomed by the club and our Bursary recipients. To make a contribution please contact the club at: info@balhamblazers.org.uk

BBFC

Burgundy Beast
A front left panel is all that remains of BBFC General Manager Greg Cruttwell’s Burgundy Beast, a car synonymous with Balham Blazers. Always full of football equipment the Beast has given it’s all to BBFC ferrying equipment to training sessions and taxiing hundreds, if not thousands, of BBFC players to and from matches for many years. The Beast, a red Mercedes 2.8, was stolen from outside Greg’s house on the day the Olympic Torch Relay came to Tooting, with, as you might expect, two bags of balls, a few bags of bibs, two sets of cones, eight training poles, a set of water bottles, a tactics board and a first aid kit in it. The whereabouts of K524 FJV became a trending topic on twitter but alas the rest of the car has not materialised. Auf Weidersehen, Burgundy Beast. Dankeschon.

BBFC At The Olympics
Two sporting legends were snapped together at the Olympics beach volleyball but the question is, which one is the swimming gold medal winner and which one is the BBFC Committee member?

BBFC Bursary Fund
Our Bursary Fund offers full or part bursaries to players selected to play for the club who can't afford all or part of the fees. To keep funding this scheme as the club grows we invite parents and friends of the club, in a position to do so, to support us by contributing donations to the Bursary Fund. Please give if you can - this is an amazing way to give a child the joy of developing their football skills within a thriving club. Any donations are extremely generous and very much welcomed by the club and our Bursary recipients. To make a contribution please contact the club: info@balhamblazers.org.uk

2012 Presentation Evening
Approximately three hundred people gathered at Trinity Fields on Wednesday July 4th for the annual BBFC Presentation Evening, at the end of our eleventh season as a club. Once again, despite the threat of rain, we were lucky with the weather and the event, sponsored by Sullivan Thomas, was a great success. The bar and burgers proved so popular that an extra run was needed to get more supplies. The addition of the bungee run and speed cage, testing who had the hardest shot worked very well. Congratulations to those who had the hardest shot on the night in their respective age groups. This event is the big night of the year when everyone comes together to celebrate the achievements of all our teams and players and thankfully it's been another very successful season for the club, so there was much to celebrate. Coaching Opportunities at BBFC
Balham Blazers F.C. are always on the lookout for new coaches and team managers. Anyone interested needs to be qualified, CRB checked and would need to share the same playing and coaching ethos as other coaches in the club. If you're interested in joining us please email info@balhamblazers.org

Charter Standard
We are delighted to announce that Balham Blazers F.C. has been awarded Charter Standard Club status by the Football Association. The FA Charter Standard Scheme is a best practice guide that sets standards of coaching, administration and child protection for all clubs outside the Football League and Premier League. As a benchmark for quality, it will improve the playing experience for all. To achieve the FA Charter Standard the Club needs to have policies and systems in place such as a written constitution, FA CRB-checked volunteers and all team managers have to have a minimum of the FA Level One Coaching badge. The club also needs behaviour Codes of Conduct in place and a commitment to attend in-service training, provide Mini-Soccer opportunities for under-10s and promote schools liaison and equal opportunities for all.

"Rightly, it’s not easy to attain, but by achieving a Charter Standard award, you are demonstrating to all members, parents and the public, that you are a well organised and safe club. It’s also an excellent way of promoting your Club to potential members, parents, volunteers and sponsors." says Les Howie, FA National Development Manager.
